Week 18: 23 months: zoo and other outside activites, fun sayings from Tyler

I'm 18 weeks already. Time certainly does fly and I feel wonderful!! The nesting has started early as J.D. and I spent the weekend building more furniture and hours of organizing and donating old clothes we don't need anymore. Wow that feels good. It feels wonderful to have my energy level back.

Baby Tyler

The weather has been amazing here so we've been eating almost every meal outside on the front porch, which is fun for everyone. Here's Ty making a happy face. Decked out in UVA gear getting ready to talk to Ballston for some frozen yogurt at Sweet Green.
With all of this nice weather, we've had a lot of time to play in the sandbox.

My dad took Ty to the Reston Petting Zoo and I'm not sure who had a better time. My dad and Tyler certainly do love each other. Ty has such a wonderful bond with each of his 4 grandparents. We are so lucky to have them all living so close to us.

Ty got to go on the tractor ride and "drive" the tractor after the ride. Definitely the highlight of the trip to the zoo (aside from the fact that Buh Puh bought him a toy blue tractor from the gift shop....now one of his most prized possessions.)

In the last month or two, Ty has gotten SO fun! He's gone from wanting to do everything on his own (since 15 months) to really want to do everything on his own (18 months) to pretty safely being able to do a lot of things on his own (21-23 months). This makes life a lot easier for us. Ty's always been very good at independent play (for as long as I can remember) and will be play by himself with his toys in his playroom for 20-30 minutes at a time. This makes cleaning up and cooking dinners (yes I'm actually cooking dinners again) so much easier. Ty also really likes to help with the cooking, but this required a LOT of extra time as he typically makes a big mess. I have to remind myself sometimes that he's not even two yet and even though he talks like a 4 year old, he's still not even 2.

Ty's also been really into emotions and making all of the different emotion faces (yes I know, I need to video this). His current faces include: happy, sad, mad, tired, thinking face, surprised, and excited. ...pretty funny!

Ty's been really into "working puzzles" (as his Gee Gee Sue likes to say). Puzzles with matching pictures are now way to easy and I'm starting to put them away. He can do puzzles with the cardboard cutouts and no pictures pretty easily as well. He is really getting good a doing a 9 piece puzzle with no cutouts. It's hard, but it's definitely where he's at. Thanks Gee Gee Sue for the endless supply of new puzzles!

Ty can now tell you where he lives: "Arlington, Virginia"
He can also tell you what street he lives on: either "Jefferson Street" or "North Jefferson Street"
He can tell you where Gee Gee Sue and Pops live: "Dreat Faws, Virginia (Great Falls)"
He can tell you where Gee Ga Jo and Buh Puh live: Matwain, Virginia (McLean)"
He also likes to ask people "Where do you live?" and "what street do you live on?"

Saying from this week:
  • "I'm brooming the floor" instead of "sweeping"
  • "I hear the dog woofing" instead of "barking"
  • While playing the ipad: "turn the volleyball up" instead of "volume"
  • Ty started saying "I'm serious."
  • Out of the blue, turning to me and saying: ""you're beautiful mommy."
  • While J.D. was shaking the rug outside: "Look at Daddy go. He is a very strong man."
  • Every time he sees a city bus or a school bus "Hello City (or school) bus. How you doing City Bus?"
  • Ty came up to me over the weekend and said "Mommy, I want to do an art project." I said okay, how about coloring. Let's get out some markers. He said "No mommy, I want to do an art project like painting. " Ty colors with markers a lot. He loves doing art! ...but apparently markers don't count as a special art project.
  • While driving to swim ("fim") class with daddy, two funny things happen: They turn off of our street on to Wilson street and Ty says "We're on Wilson Street". (Again, this is something I told him in passing when we were driving to Target and I decided I would tell him exactly how we were going to get there including the street names.....and yes, I am a speech-language pathologist...). They kept driving and drove right past the Sweet Green where Ty and I had walked 4 days earlier and Ty said "We're in Ballston". Seriously, how does he know these things??
  • While reading a Richard Scarry book, the captain of the ship's name is Captain Tilly, so I say to Ty, why don't you name your captain (one of his bath toys, thanks to Pete and Jane!) Captain Tilly, and Ty says: "No Mommy, his name is Captain Daddy."....at which point I remember that several months ago (I'm talking 5-6 months ago), when Ty was playing in the bath, I asked him what his captain's name is and he said "Captain Daddy". We literally haven't talked about this since. He has a memory like a steal trap...amazes me every day. ...also so cute that he names his captain "Captain Daddy". Ty definitely loves his mommy more than anything, but he wants to be just like his daddy (and he wants his daddy to play basketball with him all day everyday!

Update on how Baby Bluey is growing:

This week our baby is a SWEET POTATO!

Head to rump, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a bell pepper) and he weighs almost 7 ounces. He's busy flexing his arms and legs — movements that you'll start noticing more and more in the weeks ahead. His blood vessels are visible through his thin skin, and his ears are now in their final position, although they're still standing out from his head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he's born. If you're having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are formed and in place. If you're having a boy, his genitals are noticeable now, but he may hide them from you during an ultrasound.
Eighteen weeks into your pregnancy, or 16 weeks after conception, your baby's ears begin to stand out on the sides of his or her head. As the nerve endings from your baby's brain "hook up" to the ears, your baby may hear your heart beating, your stomach rumbling or blood moving through the umbilical cord. He or she may even be startled by loud noises. At 18 weeks pregnant, your baby is hitting the height chart at five and a half inches long (remember, that's crown to rump) and weighs about five ounces (the weight of that boneless chicken breast you're making for dinner). And now for the skill of the week (drum roll please…): The art of the yawn has been mastered by your baby (someone's sleepy!). In fact, you might catch a glimpse of that adorable yawn if you're getting an ultrasound this month. You'll also catch a glimpse of all the fetal movement your baby's doing — twists, rolls, kicks, and punches. And would you believe your baby is finally big enough for you to start feeling those movements now (or anytime in the next few weeks). So get ready!

Something you won't see on the ultrasound, but you'll know is in working order, is your baby's nervous system, which is maturing rapidly at this time. Nerves, now covered with a substance called myelin (which speeds messages from nerve cell to nerve cell), are forming more complex connections. And those in the brain are further specializing into the ones that serve the senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Talking about hearing, your baby's is growing more acute, making your little one more conscious of sounds that come from inside your body (which means you could both be listening to each other hiccup — a skill that your baby has by now).Oh, my aching back! If you've uttered those words more than once this week, here's why: Your uterus, now about the size of a cantaloupe, is causing your body's center of gravity to shift, pulling the lower back forward and pushing the abdomen out. On top of all that, joint-loosening pregnancy hormones are wreaking havoc on your muscles and ligaments, adding up to one big ouch! But while your pregnancy back pain has got you tied up in knots, your baby's getting ready to bust a move. At five and a half inches long and five ounces in weight, he now may be large enough for you to feel him twisting, rolling, kicking, and punching his way around the womb. Plus, he's developing yawning and hiccupping skills (you may feel those soon, too!) and his very own unique set of toe and fingerprints.

  • Vernix (a white cheese-like protective material) forms on baby's skin with the lanugo (soft, lightly pigmented hair covering the body and limbs); both serving to protect your baby's skin during the months in water.
  • Your placenta continues to grow and nourish the baby. Don't forget those prenatal vitamins!
  • Tiny air sacs called alveoli begin to form in lungs. He'll be putting these lungs to good use in just a few months!
  • Her vocal chords are formed. She goes through the motions of crying but without air she doesn't make a sound.
  • Features of your baby's heart, including ventricles and chambers, should be visible during an ultrasound.
  • Your baby measures about 5.59 inches (14.2cm) this week and weighs about 6.7 ounces (190gm).
