Week 34: Munchkie is a Cantaloupe!!

Welcome to Week 34: Munchkie is a Cantaloupe!!

Baby's Length: 18-20 in.

Baby's Weight: 4.75-5 lbs.

There wasn't too much to report this week. J.D. has been working hard at work billing lots of hours. This is exactly what he and I wanted...bill lots of hours before the baby comes! I had a good week at work as well, but not nearly as busy as J.D.

A special thanks to my dad who has been working hard with J.D. on our home improvement/get ready for the baby projects. He came over for several hours last weekend and is coming again tomorrow! Mom will also come over too just as she did last week to help get the nursery all ready!

Allie (my sister) was home from spring break this week, so I got to spend some good quality time with her. Yesterday, we walked 6 miles in the gorgeous weather!!

J.D. and I went to Buy Buy Baby today to get some of the essentials so that we can be ready when the baby comes. It's all seeming pretty real now! Very exciting! We can't wait to meet you, Munchkie!!

Munchkie has really been kicking this week. Each kick is so strong now that I actually think he may have bruised my left ribs from the inside.....not much anyone can do about that. You can almost always feel his little heal/foot on my left upper side. I have been getting some aches at the top of my belly (in the middle) where all of my organs are. I guess they are feeling pretty cramped up there.

Two random people at stores this week asked when I was due....first time in my whole pregnancy! I guess that's pretty good for 34 weeks :) Check out my belly this week (thanks to Allie for taking the picture!):

Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which will help regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her skin is also smoother than ever. Her central nervous system is maturing and her lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you've been nervous about preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies. He's clocking in at five pounds and could be as tall as 20 inches by now. This week, a boy's testicles start making their way down from his abdomen to their final destination: his scrotum (look out below!). In other baby-related developments, those tiny fingernails have probably reached the tips of his fingers by now — and getting ready for that first postpartum manicure.

  • Your baby acts completely like a newborn, with her eyes opened when awake and closed when sleeping. You may also find her settling into more of a routine for sleeping & awake times.
  • She has learned to blink. She can also see more clearly when there is a bright light on your stomach and probably has the outline of all your organs memorized!
  • Antibodies from your blood are being transferred to him. These immunities continue to build until birth. Then breast milk will add even more protection against disease.
  • Your baby may have already turned to a head-down position in preparation for birth. If he is your first baby, he may be settling into the pelvis with his head pressing against your cervix.
  • Fingernails have reached the end of the fingertips now. She may scratch her face even before she is born!
  • Your little one's length is 17.7 inches (45cm) and weight is 4.7 pounds (2146 g).
