Week 25: Munchkin is an Eggplant!

Welcome to Week 25: Munchkin is an Eggplant!

Size: 13.6 inches
Weight: 1.5 lbsWe've had another good week. J.D. has been away in California for work training this week. Check out the belly shot:
Because of my job, Munchkin gets a lot of reading and singing. Every time I read a book or sing a song to kids in therapy, Munchkin gets the pleasure of hearing it too. I wonder if he'll know all of the popular preschool songs by heart by the time he comes out....

We ordered the crib and dresser this past week and hopefully it should come to our house in approximately 2 weeks! I'm so excited! We also ordered a Pack and Play and a Highchair, which came last week. We put it together (frustrating, but so worth seeing it!) last week. It's hard to believe that we are now the owners of some real baby equipment....

Fern has volunteered to help us decorate the nursery (something I'm not good at and don't really enjoy doing by myself). We have a date to Buy Buy Baby next Tuesday to try to nail down some designs. THANKS FERN!!!

The baby continues to move around like crazy. He moves the most in the late afternoon and evening, when I'm sitting on the couch relaxing. At that time of night, I can often tell exactly where he is in my belly. When he's sitting more towards the front of my belly, I can feel him. If I push on that part of my belly it feels like a rock, but if I feel a different part, it's not nearly as hard. I'm really enjoying feeling him move around.

What's happening this coming week:
Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. Her weight — a pound and a half — isn't much more than an average rutabaga, but she's beginning to exchange her long, lean look for some baby fat. As she does, her wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and she'll start to look more and more like a newborn. She's also growing more hair — and if you could see it, you'd now be able to discern its color and texture.
  • The structures of the spine begin to form -- joints, ligaments and rings. These will protect the all important spinal cord which serves as the information transmitter for your child's body.
  • Blood vessels of the lungs develop.
  • Your baby's nostrils begin to open. There is a study out of Belfast that suggests babies at this stage have the capability of scent preferences!
  • The nerves around the mouth and lip area are showing more sensitivity now. When baby is rooting for food later on, these will be valuable!
  • His swallowing reflexes are developing.
  • Dexterity is improving. Your baby can make a fist and would clasp objects placed in palm.
  • Your child has now obtained an approximate length of 13.6 inches (34.6cm) and weighs 1.46 pound (660gm).
  • Bones are becoming solid, hands are now fully developed.
  • The brain is growing rapidly, the brain cells are starting to mature.
  • The sexual organs are fully developed.
Baby is now pretty well built portion wise even though it still has little body fat and its skin is thin. The structures of the spine begin to form -- All 33 rings, 150 joints and 1000 ligaments. The tiny brain is growing rapidly, and the baby is starting to fill the space in your uterus. The uterus is now about the size of a soccer ball and mom looks pregnant.

Twins 25 weeksYour baby's hands are now fully developed, although some of the nerve connections to the hands have a long way to go. Dexterity is improving. Your baby can make a fist and clasp objects placed in palm. Exploring the structures inside your uterus may have become baby's prime entertainment. Fascinated by the amount of tactile stimulation a fetus gives itself; it touches a hand to the face, one hand to the other hand, clasps its feet, touches its foot to its leg, its hand to its umbilical cord.

Blood vessels of the lungs develop. Your baby's nostrils begin to open. The nerves around the mouth and lip area are showing more sensitivity now. Their swallowing reflexes are developing. Baby can hear sounds outside the womb and the brain cells are starting to mature also. Already it can learn and remember and can recognise its mother and fathers voice.

Babies at 25 weeks of pregnancy stand a 50% chance of survival.
